How do you go about finding these “fried pickle places” – I just happened into Memphis Mae’s in Croton on Hudson and saw them as a side dish – the first time I got fried pickles and onion rings for my 2 “sides” – now I get fried pickles for both of my side dishes.
The waiter at Memphis Mae’s told me about your webpage and since then I have tried Rocky’s Deli in Millwood – price is good, but they weren’t as good as the others that I have tried (probably because they are frozen and pre-battered?).
I have tried 3 places so far, rocky’s is at the bottom of the list (but they are convenient, right off the parkway).
It is hard to say which is best, because they are all different:
Menphis Mae’s was spicy which is very nice…
Billy Joe’s was a new pickle (just starting to pickle, ½ way from cucumber) and was pretty good and came with 2 dipping sauces (one like honey mustard, the other like 1000 island dressing), but were 8 dollars for 6…
So when you get a chance you have to rate this “pickle place” (Billy Joe’s in Newburgh, NY) – I don’t know if you have a car (since most of the places you mention are in Manhattan or near a railroad i would guess that you are from manhattan), but there is an MTA ferry at Metro North RR from Beacon to Newburgh that stops right next door to Billy Joe’s (nice river view from the restaurant).
I myself try to sample barbecue brisket (most restaurants have chewy brisket, but I found a few that are good) and beef ribs (not very easy to find, but when found are usually pretty good). I also like chile rellanos and tamales from Mexican restaurants (some chile rellanos are real good and some aren’t)…
