This fried pickle tasting was a total surprise to us, and we couldn’t have been happier about it! We were in the city to attend a presentation where Mama Frickle Chick was being honored, and we are so so proud of her! That being said, it was an excruciatingly long evening, and all 3 of us ducked out of the event early in search of food. The closest dining establishment in sight was Heartland Brewery, so we rushed the door and demanded food. (We waited to be seated and then ordered drinks.)

We were not expecting fried pickles to be on the menu, so we were psyched to be on an unintended frickle tasting. We ordered them right away, and this beauty came out of the kitchen faster than a group of hungry women fleeing a boring awards show.

HeartlandBrewery

Chive and sweet pepper garnished these scrumptious sours.

They were really really good! Since Heartland Brewery is a bit of chain restaurant, we weren’t expecting this level of deliciousness, but they were awesome, and so was everything else we ordered. Fried pickles, alright!

Homemade and very crispy, yet juicy when we bit in. They were dill pickles, not sour, which was a nice departure from the norm. The plate was garnished with chives and sweet red pepper, which was a great touch.

These frickles were AWESOME! We loved them, but the price was a bit high and the serving size was a bit low. Lack of condiment options wasn’t great either, so we can’t give them a perfect score.

This Frickle Chicks post is sponsored by Grandma and Grandpa, who were kind enough to take the Chicks out for a special lunch date at The Greene Turtle, that started with a round of fried picks for everyone!

Grandma and Grandpa got a great bargain on the meal. You shoulda seen the portion sizes, you wouldn't believe it.

Grandma and Grandpa got a great bargain on the meal. You shoulda seen the portion sizes, you wouldn’t believe it.

The Greene Turtle is a typical chain sports bar, with more TVs than you can count and more merch than you ever thought a bar was capable of selling. There were like, 45 different tee-shirts on sale at the register. Madness.

Anyway, the ride to Long Island was long and food-less, so we were starving when we got to the restaurant. Imagine if you were lost in the desert with no food or water, on the brink of dying from dehydration. You had been drinking your own pee for days. And then, out of the sky a magical cloud appeared and rained down upon you the sweetest water you had ever tasted.

That was basically what happened. Except the rain was pickles and the desert was a Subaru Forrester.

There was nothing especially exceptional about these frickles. They were pre-frozen and fried on site, but there’s something to be said for knowing exactly what you are going to get. They were  super tasty, and exactly what we were craving.

I stumbled across The Penrose by accident a few weeks ago, completely expecting it to be one of my old stomping grounds, the sports bar, Ship of Fools. Sadly, my favorite dive bar had closed it’s doors, but I decided to give this new fancy pants spot a chance. Although the beer pong area was unrecognizable now that the place had floors, the menu looked great, and it was kind of nice to sit in a chair that wasn’t held together with duct tape.

The frickles were great, made with McClure’s Brooklyn Pickles, in a fluffy beer batter. The best part of the frickles were the huge pickle chunks inside each one. Another menu item worth an honorable mention: breadcrumb battered fried Brussels sprouts in buffalo wing sauce.

Bareburger- Hartsdale

In an unprecedented move, never before seen by the eyes of a Frickle Chick… a restaurant has placed TWO different styles of frickle on one menu. Finally. The world is catching on. Not only are there two types of fried pickles at Bareburger, the whole menu is fantastic, organic, creative, delicious treats. Becca took approximately 4 hours deciding what to order for her entree since everything looked so good.

The condiment selection was on a level all it’s own. If the Frickle Chicks did an award show (which maybe we should consider) Bareburger would definitely get the Condiment Award of the Century. Hands down. Every dish came with it’s own selection of multiple, hand-mixed condiments.

Finally! A dining establishment that gets it.

To be fair, we have to rate the texture of each type of frickle individually. They each had their own merits worthy of distinctive recognition. These ratings were established with the help of celebrity guest fricklers, Jennifer and Justin.

These frickles had hot pepper flakes mixed into the batter, which was outrageously delicious. Even though the spears are supposed to be spicy, we thought the chips were much spicier. The batter was great, but they were a little too crunchy, somehow.

Cornmeal Crusted Spicy Pickle Spears Texture:

Still very good, but the spears weren’t spicy, as advertised. The batter tasted yummy, but some of it fell off when you took a bite. There were also two spears that were only battered on two sides, so the unbreaded area was a little burned.

Bareburger is out of this world. We could eat here every day for the rest of our lives and be happy little Frickle Chicks. They even have brunch. Brunch?? Brunch!

But we are here to rate the fried pickle portion of the evening, and must stay focused. They were great, not the best we’ve ever had, but the overall experience was stellar.

Savannah’s Southern House

Location: 3901 Crompond Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598

Savannah’s Southern House just opened up in Yorktown recently. It’s a good looking space with a nice sized bar and two floors for dining. The only menu item I sampled was the fried pickles, and they were very good.

Savannahs1

A vision to behold.

Although I went for the frickles, I was also looking forward to a having a beer, since the website advertises 10 beers on tap! I was bummed out when I got there to see 3 of the drafts were empty, and I wasn’t feeling the (mostly hoppy) other options. But I still got my frickles, super fast and super yummy, so I was a happy Frickle Chick!

This is Lyss’s favorite kind of fried pickle! Thick spears with the ideal crunchiness factor. It held together perfectly, and the pickle stayed put in the batter without falling out after each bite. Not an easy feat to accomplish. Two thumbs up.

The Frickle Chicks are back from vacation: tanned, relaxed, and raring to go with tons of frickle reviews. We’re most excited to start with one from our yearly vacation spot, Cape Cod. Each year we make sure to take a visit to Provincetown, and this time we tried a restaurant that’s new to us, called WayDownTown. We were going through fried pickle withdrawal from lack of frickles in Massachusetts, but thank god we finally found a place that could give us our fix.

Frickle destination finally located in Cape Cod.

Mama Bear Frickle accompanied us, and was delighted to become the celebrity guest spot for this post. Here she is posing with Bexy Doodles.

Let’s get down to business. Enough frickling around.

We may be slightly biased since we were in such dire straights for our favorite food, but although these were pre-frozen and then deep fried, they were still freaking awesome. Lyss loves a good beer batter, and these hit the spot. There was also a pretty sweet craft beer selection which complimented the frickles just beautifully. (New favorite, Cape Cod Beach Blonde.)
