Westchester Burger Co.

Located at: 106 Westchester Avenue, White Plains, NY 10601

Westchester Burger Co. is located right across from The Westchester Mall in White Plains, and a great option for dinner when you are starving after a day of shopping, yet desperate to leave the mall. It is a casual atmosphere with spacious seating, as well as a full bar against the back wall. Slightly reminiscent of Pizzeria Uno’s, it kind of felt like a chain restaurant, yet for some reason we really enjoyed it anyway. The fried pickles were to die for… they truly made our top 5 list. And of course, the best part, the condiment, was amazing. A mayo-based paprika/pickle remoulade with a hint of cayenne pepper. At our next cooking extravaganza we can guarantee we will be hijacking this little trick and putting chopped pickles into all of the sauces!

Pickle chunks in the sauce- nice touch!

Texture:   Huge Ass Pickle   Huge Ass Pickle = 5 (highest)

These frickles had the perfect consistency. The outside was perfectly crispy and the inside had a very light layer of doughy breading. They were similar to Go Burger’s frickles, only less cakey. Love love love.

Serving Size:      Whole Pickle = 4

12 generously sized peices.

Condiment Selection:        Whole Pickle = 4

There was ketchup and mustard on the table, and the frickles came with an AWESOME paprika/pickle remoulade, made with a mayo base and real live chunks of pickle.

Wait Time:      Whole Pickle = 4

Moderate.  The wait time was pretty average, not too quick and not too long.

Service:         Whole Pickle = 4

Our lovely Irish waitress was friendly, but not overly-perky.

Price:       Pickle Spear = 3

$6.00

Overall:      Whole Pickle = 4

We will definitely return to Westchester Burger Co. for fried pickes! One of our faves!

Buffalo Wild Wings- White Plains

Located at: 1 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10601

Fried pickle cheers!

Have any of you ever been to the Buffalo Wild Wings in White Plains? It’s so cool, it’s in a bank! The architecture of the building is gorgeous both inside and out, and while I’d rather see that kind of facility turned into a theater or artistic venue, getting served fried pickles from the kitchen (which is inside the renovated vault) is pretty freaking cool.

Buffalo Wild Wings is notorious for their wide array of condiments and hot sauces, so obviously, we were excited before we even walked in the door. As all of our adoring frickle fans know (or as Lady Gaga calls them, little fried monsters) for us, condiments can make or break the overall experience. This time, the condiments were the saving grace of our dining experience, as the fried pickles left much to be desired. The biggest problem for us was the cornmeal-batter. Neither of us are fans of cornmeal on anything to begin with, and with the bulk of the batter made from cornmeal/hundreds of miniature rock-like substances, we were more excited about the variety of 20 sauces and seasonings than our actual dish.

18 golden pucks of cornmealy glory

Texture:         Pickle Chip = 2

We know some people love it, but we thought there was way too much cornmeal. They were also extremely salty, but the creamy condiments balanced that out.

Serving Size:      Whole Pickle = 4

18 peices.

Condiment Selection: Huge Ass Pickle  Huge Ass Pickle = 5 (highest)

20 various sauces and seasonings, as well as Southwest Chipotle Ranch that came with the frickles.

Wait Time:      Whole Pickle = 4

Moderate.  The wait time was pretty average, not too quick and not too long.

Service:       Pickle Spear = 3

Our waiter was headed for a 4 until he left us waiting 20 minutes for the check! Ugh. Sorry buddy, down to a 3.

Price:       Pickle Spear = 3

$5.99

The Peekskill Brewery

Located at: 55 Hudson Avenue Peekskill, NY 10566

The Peekskill Brewery, located right across from the Peekskill train station on the Hudson River, is a frickle spot we have been trying to get to for quite some time. When we heard frickles were added to the menu, we knew we had to try them, but wanted to give the chefs some time to perfect their recipe and they came pretty close! The menu item is served as half fried pickles and half fried jalapenos, each coated in a delicious tempura batter that we thought slightly resembled fried dough. The chef was nice enough to give us a complimentary ‘Pot of Pickles’ which consisted of pickled seasonal veggies (cauliflower, carrots, celery, baby pickles, golden beets, and onions), toast and sea salt butter.  It was very unique and delicious! (This frickle gig has really been paying off for us lately ;)    !)

Our huge ass serving of frickles!

Texture:      Whole Pickle = 4

Crunchy and crispy tempura breading. These frickles were delicious and full of crispy goodness, but we thought that the pickle slices were too thin and should have been a bit thicker so that they wouldn’t get lost in the taste of the breading.

Serving Size:   Huge Ass Pickle   Huge Ass Pickle = 5 (highest)

Amillion and one pieces, including jalapeno slices.  An overflowing bowl full of crispy fried love.

Condiment Selection:    Pickle Spear = 3

Homemade Ranch-Parmesan Garlic dressing- YUM! (One of the best ranch dressings I’ve ever had!)  But… as we are both condiment lovers, we were a little upset that no other condiments were offered.

Wait Time:      Whole Pickle = 4

Moderate.  The wait time was pretty average, not too quick and not too long.

Service:    Huge Ass Pickle   Huge Ass Pickle = 5 (highest)

Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful.  Besides the fact that the chef gave us a complimentary ‘Pot of Pickles’ which was delicious, he also made an appearance at the table to check up on how our food and our frickles were treating us! Great service!

Price:       Pickle Spear = 3

$6.00 They were great quality and great serving size, but seemed a little pricey in comparison to our other frickle adventures.

Overall:     Whole Pickle = 4

We would definitely go back to the Peekskill Brewery for some frickles and jalapenos, as well as to enjoy one of the many handcrafted beers.

Lyss and guest-star Stroker, frickling their lives away.

Kirby’s Grill and Bar

Located at: 345 Kear Street, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598

You’re probably thinking to yourself, “wait a minute, I didn’t know Kirby’s had fried pickles,” and you’re right… sort of. After looking over the menu and seeing such eclectic appetizers as beer battered cheddar pints, corn nuggets and queso sticks, I thought what the heck, I might as well take a shot in the dark and ask if they have fried pickles even though they aren’t listed on the menu. Since we were the only people in the bar at the time the bartender said that he could probably hook something up for us in the kitchen. Fast forward 5 minutes and I was confronted with a heaping basket of  TWELVE AMAZING SAUCE fried pickles, with TWO, count em, two condiments. Dreams do come true. Kirby’s, if you are reading this, you have the best freaking frickles the frickle chicks have ever tasted, PLEASE make them a permanent feature on the menu!

Dear Kirbys, PLEASE put these frickles on the menu!

Texture:   Huge Ass Pickle   Huge Ass Pickle = 5 (highest)

The kitchen made a special spicy ranch, but also put BBQ sauce on the plate.

The bartender arranged this order especially for us, so we’ve got to give him a 5.

Price:    Huge Ass Pickle   Huge Ass Pickle = 5 (highest)

$4.00, 12 spears. You do the math.

Rocky’s Deli

Located at: Mill Plaza, 235 Saw Mill Road, Millwood, NY 10546

You know those online quizzes: “you know you’re a redneck if…” or “you know you were born in the 80′s if…”? Well mine would say: “You know you grew up in Northern Westchester if… You went to Rocky’s Deli every Saturday night between 11pm – 3am for your entire high school career.” Rocky’s Deli is the late-night pit stop renowned throughout Northern Westchester because it’s open 24 hours. Pizza places close at 10pm and the diners shut down around 1am, so if you’ve got a craving for some munchies it’s really the only option… and it’s a GREAT option! Everyone loves Rocky’s, and insomniacs from 30 minutes away will embark on the drive for a perfectly put-together NY deli sandwich at any hour. On the rare occasion that I stop in during day light, I’m always taken aback by the normal clientele filling the shop- soccer moms and office workers stocking up on cold cuts and heros- I forget that grown-ups come here too. So imagine my surprise when I stumbled in for a breakfast sandwich one morning and not only were there adults everywhere (always catches me off guard) but there was a cute little print-out sign on the counter that said, “We now serve frickles.” My thoughts of eggs and cheese were immediately forgotten, and I ordered up the frickles without a care that it was 8am. They were unlike any frickles I’ve had before- they weren’t homemade- but they weren’t bad. They resembled the mozzarella sticks at any chain restaurant, but with pickles inside instead of cheese. The breading was super thick and kind of doughy, but in a good way. Needless to say, the space I hold in my heart for Rocky’s grew a little bigger that day.

Sorry for the blue hue- I was caught off guard with only my cell phone to take pix.

Texture:      Pickle Spear = 3

Like mozzarella sticks with pickles instead of cheese.

Serving Size:       Whole Pickle = 4

6 spears per serving.

Condiment Selection:   Stem   Pickle Tail = 1

Sigh. Not even ketchup.

Wait Time:      Pickle Spear = 3

I’m pretty sure they forgot about my order, so next time it might be faster but it took about 10 minutes, which is a lot when you’re standing at the deli counter looking longingly at the deep fryer.

Service:     Whole Pickle = 4

Woulda been a Huge Ass Pickle, but I think they forgot my order.

Price:    Huge Ass Pickle   Huge Ass Pickle = 5 (highest)

$3 for 6 spears.

Overall:       Pickle Spear = 3

Not the best, but not bad at all.

Memphis Mae’s

Located at: 173 South Riverside Avenue, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520

HOLY YUMMY! Before I even say anything, let’s begin with a picture:

These pickle spears are soaked in magical jalapeno brine for 36 hours before being battered and fried.

Memphis Mae’s BBQ Bistro, located in Westchester County, is a divergence from the backwoods BBQ spots that I’m used to. Don’t get me wrong, I love a dive bar 6 days a week, but sometimes it’s nice to sit in a chair that actually has a back on that 7th day. Mae’s has a great selection of local(ish) and craft beers, which perfectly complimented the salty and spicy frickles. Yes, that’s right, these pickles are soaked in jalapeno brine for 36 hours before being battered and fried, and it adds an awesome bite to the taste. The frickle chicks are huge fans of all things spicy, hot wingy, and peppery, so after falling in love with this awesome twist on frickles, we tested our luck with Jalapeno Bottlecaps. All we can can say is… nothing, because our tongues are still numb from the blazing injuries we endured. Bex thought these were hot hot hot- but great (she said while drooling from her mouth). These are for the strong stomached fans of flaming food ONLY!

Jalapeno Bottlecaps. Ingest at your own risk.

Texture:      Whole Pickle = 4

Really delicious, crispy batter.

Serving Size:      Pickle Spear = 3

5 spears per serving.

Condiment Selection:   Stem   Pickle Tail = 1

There was not even ONE condiment served with the frickles. There was BBQ sauce and honey mustard on the table, but they weren’t that good. This was a hard blow for us to recover from. The jalapeno bottlecaps were served with “Alabama Sauce,” which was a thin creamy peppercorn dressing. Eh.

Wait Time:      Whole Pickle = 4

Our order took a little less than 10 minutes.

Service:    Huge Ass Pickle   Huge Ass Pickle = 5 (highest)

Our waiter was super nice and patient with us even though I spilled salad dressing all over the entire table. He also coached Lyss through her first piece of pickled okra.

Price:    Huge Ass Pickle   Huge Ass Pickle = 5 (highest)

All fixin’s on the menu are only $2.95! Amazing.

Overall:     Whole Pickle = 4

Lyss really loved the jalapeno brine touch, as did Bex but wasn’t completely won over. Overall, these rate pretty freaking high on our list!

Shoutout to Bret, our honorary frickle taster for the evening.
